1973 Lotus Elan Sprint DHC

Completely original and fabulous throughout including chassis with great detail including factory stickers. Two owners and 40,000 miles from new with full history from bill of sale to date. An incredible find and a superb drive.

A Mr Richard Hemes purchased the Elan when new from Lotus Dealer Foley Park Motors of Kidderminster as detailed in the original invoice on file. Obviously a motoring enthusiast he part exchanged a 1966 Mini Cooper for which he was given £250 against a sale price for the Lotus of £2,195.

Mr Hemes obviously loved the little Elan as he kept it until 2004. Initially he used the Lotus on a regular basis covering 34,000 miles in the first three years as confirmed by the first MOT required in 1976 on file. Thereafter the car was used sparingly, indeed it spent most of the 1980’s and 90’s as an exhibit in the well-known Midland Motor Museum as confirmed by correspondence and invoicing on file.

Mr Hemes took the car back from the museum in the early years of this century and recommissioned it for the road before gentle summer use. A number of invoices on file detail the work completed consisting of what one might expect from a car that had little use for many years.

In 2004 Mr Hemes offered the car for sale through the highly respected Lotus specialist Paul Matty who had completed some of the recommissioning work. The Elan was soon purchased by a Lotus enthusiast well known to The Hairpin Company. The Elan was in good company in his collection which included an Elan Sprint Coupe with just 7,000 miles and an Elite S2 with 4,000 miles, amongst others. During his tenure the Elan was very carefully looked after and driven very occasionally. Invoices on file from Lotus gurus Ken and Neil Myers and Paul Matty detail the work completed which basically involved sorting and setting the car up perfectly, without compromising originality.

This really is a glorious Elan, it is hard to believe there could be a better original example in existence, the much abused “time warp” moniker is well deserved here. In all respects the car has a rightness that a restored car never quite achieves, this is especially true on the road where the Elan remains so tight and fluent.
